Sedation Dentistry

Nitrous Oxide — Laughing Gas for Children

One of the safest, most widely used sedation methods in paediatric dentistry — used routinely by Dr Sabrina for anxious children and longer procedures.

01

Safe & Controlled

Nitrous oxide has been used in paediatric dentistry for decades. Your child remains fully conscious and responsive at all times.

02

Calm, Not Sedated

The gas helps your child relax without putting them to sleep. They can still follow instructions and communicate throughout.

03

Wears Off Instantly

Within minutes of removing the mask, the effects are completely gone. No grogginess, no recovery time — your child goes home normally.

04

Ideal For

Fearful or anxious children, longer procedures, children with a strong gag reflex, and kids who struggle to sit still.

"Your child remains awake, calm, and responsive throughout the procedure."
Nitrous oxide wears off completely within minutes — no lingering effects.

Hospital-Based Treatment

General Anaesthesia (GA) at JMC Hospital

For cases where standard dental chair treatment isn't possible, Dr Sabrina works closely with the anaesthesia team at JMC Hospital — providing comprehensive, safe dental treatment in a fully controlled environment.

GA Is Considered For:

  • Very young children with multiple cavities
  • Severe dental anxiety or phobia
  • Special needs patients unable to cooperate in the dental chair
  • Complex cases requiring full mouth treatment in one session
  • Medical cases (e.g. heart conditions, cleft palate) needing hospital setting

What Parents Can Expect:

  • Full dental treatment completed in ONE session
  • Does NOT require an overnight hospital stay
  • Performed in hospital OT with anaesthesia team monitoring
  • Safe, controlled, predictable environment
  • Results assessed jointly by Dr Sabrina and the anaesthetist

"Every case is carefully evaluated by the Dental Specialist and Anaesthetist to ensure the highest level of safety and clinical need before GA is involved."

Parent Education

Questions Every Parent Asks

The recommended age for a first dental visit is when the first tooth appears — usually around 6 months — or by age one at the latest. Early visits help us catch problems early and, just as importantly, create a positive association with dental care from the start. The earlier we begin, the easier every future visit becomes.

Absolutely. Baby teeth are space-holders for adult teeth — if a baby tooth is lost too early due to decay or trauma, neighbouring teeth shift into the gap, causing crowding and alignment problems later. Baby teeth also affect speech development, eating ability, and your child's confidence. Treating them is always worthwhile.

Dr Sabrina recommends an early orthodontic assessment from age 7, even if no visible problems are obvious. At this age, we can identify jaw growth patterns, habits like thumb sucking or mouth breathing, and early crowding — and intervene before it becomes more complex and costly. Invisalign for teens is also available for appropriate cases.

Yes — nitrous oxide is one of the safest and most widely used sedation methods in paediatric dentistry worldwide. Your child remains fully awake, calm, and responsive throughout. It wears off within minutes after the mask is removed, with no lingering drowsiness. Dr Sabrina uses it routinely for anxious children and longer procedures.

GA is carefully considered and only recommended when absolutely necessary — for very young children with multiple cavities, children with severe dental phobia, or special needs patients who cannot cooperate in the dental chair. The procedure is performed in a controlled hospital OT environment (JMC) with a qualified anaesthesia team. Every case is evaluated thoroughly by both Dr Sabrina and the anaesthetist before proceeding.

Yes. Dr Sabrina has extensive experience with special needs children including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, developmental delay, and sensory sensitivities. We offer desensitisation visits, extended appointment times, parental involvement in the chair, and flexible treatment pacing. Sedation options are available when needed.
